An at-risk student describes a scholar who is likely to fail at school and requires temporary or ongoing interventions to succeed academically.
Characteristics of at-risk students include emotional or behavioral problems, truancy, low academic performance, lack of interest in school, or a disconnection from the school environment.
An advocate is a person who listens, advises, supports, and empowers families in obtaining quality service through expert help.
You need an advocate when you feel like you are not being heard, you are unfamiliar with how to get help for your struggling student, or you need an expert to speak on your behalf. The best time to hire an advocate is at the beginning stages of getting your child appropriated services to meet his/her needs. Note, it is never too late to get an advocate.
Services that are available to at-risk students involve academic and behavior support. Some of these supports include Early Intervention Program (EIP), Response to Intervention (RTI), Individualized Education Plan, behavior intervention, and 504 plans.
